Barbara Ellard
Lead Guide (She/Her)
I grew up just north of Boston, MA. I've always liked to be outdoors, but being on the coast meant a lot of time at the ocean. I also enjoyed the western part of Massachusetts, the Berkshires, as well as the mountains in Vermont and New Hampshire. And the coast of Maine is amazing! My main interest growing up was in art. As a child my mother supported my interest in making things with my hands.
I attended Boston University's Program in Artisanry as a Ceramics major. I now have a home ceramics studio and work on both functional and sculptural pieces that are displayed and sold in a number of Utah galleries.
In 1988 I made my first trip to the Southwest and visited a number of National Parks. Zion National Park made a memorable impact. I returned in the spring of 1990 and decided to move to Springdale as soon as possible. I was here by September of that year. When I first arrived in Springdale I ran a Bed and Breakfast. I met Zion visitors from all over the country and the world. I was able to connect them with my favorite hiking places as well as local favorite spots to visit. Sharing this special place has always been a great joy to me.
In 2015, I decided to volunteer in Zion with the Education Department. This quickly turned into a job which was funded by ZNPFP, our park nonprofit organization. Focusing my love and knowledge of the park with children was especially rewarding. This then lead me to my guiding work with Zion Guru. This is my sixth season working as a guide here in Zion and also in Bryce National Park with Zion Guru. It has been a fantastic work environment for me. Meeting new people daily and sharing my love of this park is the best!
