Chris Stevens
Lead Guide/Guide Manager
I grew up living all over the East Coast, from Vermont to Florida. As a kid, I was always an avid explorer, often spending summer nights in a makeshift shelter I built myself. At 22, I joined the U.S. Air Force and served for 25 years, which eventually brought me to Utah for my final assignment.
When I started exploring Utah, I immediately fell in love with the diverse landscapes across the varying elevations — from lowland deserts to forested mountains to high alpine meadows. Mountain biking had always been my primary passion, but then I discovered canyoneering. It opened up an entirely new world — one sculpted by nature over hundreds of thousands of years and largely unseen by humans until very recently. I also geek out on the technical aspects of navigating this rugged terrain safely.
Shortly before retiring from the Air Force, I had the opportunity to meet the owner of Zion Guru and shadow him while he trained two new canyoneering guides.
His approach with meeting clients where they were and helping them build confidence, immediately resonated with me. I knew I wanted to make this my career. On the second day, I asked him for a job. I started as an outfitter and assistant guide, working my way up to lead guide. Now, I’m proud to be the guide manager for Zion Guru..
